Hail Rhode Island!

Today we're leading the charge into Rhode Island! We're sending light and love out to protect this wonderful state from the Dominionist and the DC40 Prayer Initiative. If you have a great story or link you'd like to share about Rhode Island, leave me a comment and I'll check it out or head over to the Facebook Group "What Makes Your State Great" and join the lively discussion. There will be blog posts, music and stories shared throughout the day.

As always, giving credit to my source, 50states.com

Now let's head over to the birthday of the first amendment!

Hail Rhode Island!

Rhode Island was the last of the original thirteen colonies to become a state. Rhode Island is the smallest state in size in the United States. It covers an area of 1,214 square miles. Its distances North to South are 48 miles and East to West 37 miles.

Rhode Island's official state name is Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. Roger Williams, founder of Rhode Island, established the first practical working model of Democracy after he was banished from Plymouth, Massachusetts because of his "extreme views" concerning freedom of speech and religion.

Thomas Jefferson and John Adams publicly acknowledged Roger Williams, as the originator of the concepts and principles reflected in The First Amendment. Among those principles were freedom of religion, freedom of speech, and freedom of public assembly.

My Favorite Paranormal shows The Atlantic Paranormal Society (TAPS) is located in Warwick RI.

This is a youtube video of the top ten clips from the show.

I personally love this shot. Unfortunately the embed option has been removed. But it's really a great clip.

The original inhabitants of Rhode Island were:

The Narragansett tribe
The Niantic tribe
The Wampanoag tribe

I found this video related to the Narragansett tribe, The United For Justice campaign and how 30 acres of land was being removed from their tribe. It was filmed on March 20th and 21st, 2009

Learning about our past will help us prevent the same mistakes in the future. The founder of Rhode Island understood the separation of Church and State. We should take this information and apply it going forward. We do not need to govern our land with religion. We should all be free to practice as we wish.

Sending light and love to the great state of Rhode Island.

Namaste & Blessed Be

One of the most positive and fairly little known facts about Mr. Williams is that he purchased much of the state from the native tribes, an action almost unheard of at the time.

I also heartily endorse visiting Roger Williams park and Zoo! www.rogerwilliamsparkzoo.org

Another fun fact, Bristol, RI has America's oldest Fourth of July Celebration in the country, started in 1785 and will be celebrating it's 227th parade in 2012. www.july4thbristolri.com/

Oh, as you drive through lovely Providence on I-95, be sure to wave at the New England Pest Control big blue bug, and check out his current fashions! http://www.bluebug.com/

As the author of the I {heart} Rhody blog and recent Rhode Island transplant, thank you for your posts! Everyone should feel like their home place has something special about it - because it does.

Rhode Islanders are proud of the impact that Roger Williams had on our state, and on our nation's history. Did you know that RI was the last colony to become a state because they refused to ratify the Constitution until there was a guarantee of freedom of religion?

I'm going to link to this point next week, as I'm sure my readers will be interested, too.

I have lived in RI since I was 5 years old and I can honestly say I wouldn't want to live or grow up anywhere else. No matter where I am in the state, I feel at home.
