Throwing Thursday - Kaboom

I've been reading several sites that say have separate shelves for your different types of pottery. Greenware, bisque ware and so on.  Today even after thinking I had a handle on it I learned the hard way how important it is to keep your pottery separate.

At first I thought my Goddess statue had exploded due to size and thickness but upon further inspection I figured out what actually happened.  Earlier this week I threw three new pots.  I set them up on the shelf with my other pottery that was waiting for bisque fire.  This morning hubby and I were chatting and unloading the glaze fire that had just finished before coffee.  (Yes, I'm blaming lack of coffee)  In any event I inadvertently put the three new pots that were only 3 days off the bat into a kiln of bone dry pottery.  What happens when you put pots that are not properly dried into a bisque fire kiln?

So now, going forward, I will have one shelf that is only for items that are bone dry.  Period.

Throwing Thursday - Votives

So my votive are coming a long nicely.   Here's a look at them with the cut outs.

This is the solid form

Mass Invites and Why We Hate Them

Being a part of social media on places like Facebook does a lot to get a message out to the general public.  You can post a cause, a rant or even share a funny video and see a reaction from a large number of your friends.

And sometimes this can cause issues.  In some of the applications on Facebook you can send a mass notification/invite to all your friends to either come in and play a game or vote up a cause you sponsor.

These have become so annoying to some that a special line of memes has been created for just such an occasion.

As an avid gamer, I really have no issue with game invites.  If I don't want to play I go over and click the notification and choose to ignore the game.  I do it once for each game and boom no more invitations.

The steps are -  Click on Games under the APPS heading

Facebook Screenshot

Click the X next to the invite or notification and choose "Block game name" and you're done.  Now that being said, I would never block Words with Friends, that's really the only game I play and I love Barbie-gard so I would never block her either.

The point is that you can easily block a game invite while keeping your friends and don't have to post the crazy aggressive threats to kill people if they send you game invites.

Now, let's talk about the sender.  While Facebook makes it so easy to mass invite your friends, why not take a moment and think about the invites you're sending.  Sure, they can click no and move on but really why send a game about killing turtles to a friend who is an animal lover.  Why send an invitation to add nativity displays to the atheist on your friends list?  It really doesn't make sense.  I can see why the anti gamer group gets so upset at having hundreds of these in their inbox at one time.

So before you hit that "send to all my friends" button, take a moment to think about a few things.  Is this something I care so much about that I want to send it to all my friends?  How about I just share it on my wall and those that want to click on it, can?  Remember to be polite when notifying your friends about games or other things you follow and want to invite them to.  Mass invites are like junk mail.  You're not asking Barb to play Words with Friends, you're asking the world to play and that's just not cool.

By the way, I love Words with Friends and that is pretty much the only game I play.  Those that want to play are welcome to send me an invite.  Other games that are sent, I will just block.  I won't get mad, or post a nastygram on my newsfeed.   :)

Throwing Thursday - Votive & Sculpture

Weeks of Throwing and drying and still here I am with more pots to throw.  Thus far the goddess I threw about two weeks ago is nearly dry.  I have about two - three more weeks and we should be ready to bisque.

A few more burners were created last night and are now waiting to fire with her.

Profit or Prophet?

Paganism is an umbrella term that is generally used to encompass all non-Abrahamic religions.  That, as you can imagine, is a pretty big umbrella.  The three major branches of the Abrahamic religions are Judaism, Christianity and Islam.  That would leave everything from Atheist to Zoroastrianism.  And that’s a massive number of religious and spiritual groups in between.  That group that are in that umbrella term really don’t fit together as a group at all.  We have those who follow the teachings of Buddhism, those who practice Sikhism and those who simply walk outside and feel the earth below them as a form of religion.  In 2013 I completed the process to become an ordained minister as part of a commitment to the Goddess Hecate.  Even though my religion is not an official church and does not have an organized, established sanctuary other than the trees that witness my rites to her honor.  Paganism includes all these groups and tries to house them in a neatly organized pile for the world to see.

There are some groups that have official church status and are recognized as such.  They are considered non-profit organizations and work to provide training and support for those who follow their path.  Circle Sanctuary for example has a Ministry Training Program they offer.  Circle Sanctuary is a Shamanic Wiccan Church founded in 1974.  The Rev. Selena Fox is the high priestess and senior minister there. Many groups offer training and when joining some covens they offer specific training for their members to advance in the ranks.  As a Torchbearer to the Goddess Hecate for the Covenant of Hekate, I had a set of specific requirements I needed to complete in order to be considered for that honor.  There was a large amount of study and community service required.  At no point was I required to make a payment for the training/information other than books that I purchased online from other sources.  Since there was no classrooms or electricity I can understand that it was relativity free for me to get my training.

Now what about those places where they have a physical shop location that has bills to pay.   Should magically knowledge be freely given?  Should we as magical people offer our services to others without the request for payment in kind? There are just as many opinions on this subject as there are spiritual groups between A & Z under our umbrella. Some believe that magical knowledge should be given freely and only by a certain few.  Someone who is a Sage or Crone in the community should take on the role of teacher and pass his or her knowledge down the line to the younger generations.  Others believe that someone who has just started out should be allowed to not only teach but charge their students huge fees in order to get the gift of magic.

I can say that fees can put the kibosh on magically dreams faster than you can say alakazam.  I wanted desperately to be trained in Reiki.  I read all I could on it and even practiced a bit in the form hands on healing and not stone massage techniques.  When I questioned on line how to find a Reiki Master to train me I was told, when it is time they will find you. They found me and wanted $10K to take me to the Master level. I was mortified and gave up.

I believe in fairness and equality.  I don’t think that knowledge should be held ransom by a dollar sign and I also don’t believe that people should benefit from the experience of others unfairly.  Each of us has something unique to bring to the table.  The act of barter and service is something that should really be considered when it comes time to offer magical instruction to others.  As the owner of a property that is looking to become a dedicated Sanctuary, I have tons of yard work, debris removal and so on that will need to be done.  I volunteer with a TNR group that need animals transported to and fro as well as feeding and trapping that can be assisted with. There is no limit to the amount of things that we could work out in trade if we just open our mind a bit.

I cannot say that class one should be 700.00 or 7.00 but I can say as Pagan people, people who are of the earth and of the community; People who come together to help each other whenever we can, which is more important?  To make a profit or to be a prophet?  Now, I’m using the term very loosely, but you understand what I mean.

Freedom FROM Religion

First I want to apologize for any misuse of names, words or phrases.  I am not a religious scholar and have not studied any of these religions.  My information comes simply from observation, what I've read in news stories and what I've experienced first hand. I ask that any misuse not be taken as offensive.  That is not my intent.

Over the last three days I have been really sick.  Hubby brought the flu bug home and I've been stuck coughing, sneezing and reading on the internet.  I try not to take a lot of medications so I've been fighting this thing with herbal tea, egg drop and chicken noodle soup.  Yesterday the news came across regarding an attack on Charlie Hebdo, a satirical magazine in Paris.  Paris has a large population of Muslims who believe that any depiction of Allah at all is blasphemy.  Drawings, that here in the United States and in other countries around the world, would be considered harmless are deemed worth of death by some.

Today in USA Today an editorial piece was posted stating that people knew what they were getting into when they poke fun at radical groups.  The article asserted that the magazine was aware of the feelings their work produced and in turn actually provoked the attack.  Taunting followers into retaliating against them and causing their own deaths.  Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League followed with a statement that said, "Muslims are right to be angry." and "Had Charbonnier not been so narcissistic, he may still be alive." reported by the Washington Post.

I sit and think about what does it mean to be killed for drawing a picture, showing a movie or writing a book?  While I understand that people get offended at some point we need to grow.  I fast forward to this afternoon when I'm moderating some posts in a group I belong to on Facebook. I look at the post and my head cocks sideways.  There is a post where someone is actually praising Hecate for getting out of a speeding ticket.  My first thought was Tim Tebow and his end zone prayers.  Hecate did no more for getting my groupie out of his speeding ticket than Jesus did for helping Tim with his touchdown.

Herein lies the reason we have shootings over someone drawing a picture of Mohammad's butt. People cannot separate fantasy from reality.  They cannot separate a myth that teaches us a story from factual events.  I believe that everyone should have the right to believe what they want to believe.

That being said, I also understand that at no point did a woman with the head of a bull, a horse and a snake walk the earth.  At no time did a Titan Goddess stand up next to Zeus and defeat the other Titans to defend Olympus. At no time did Helios see Persephone taken by Hades into the underworld and cause the beginning of winter.  These are stories to explain what we could not explain. Jesus is not the reason for the season, the tilt of the earth is. I adore Hecate.  I love to read the stories of her and follow how many different civilizations followed her.   I have two altars to her in my house and one outside my house.  I light candles and incense to her in a daily devotional.  I do this to remind me that I want to live my life to represent her virtues, not out of some fear that I must do it so that I don't get punished. I do it because I want to focus my energy on being a better person not because if I don't do it she will be angry with me.

So because I believe that Hecate never walked the earth does that make me an atheist? I don't know. Maybe it does, maybe it doesn't.  It doesn't change the fact that when I think about cleaning out my closets that I don't think about giving to others because of what I read about her. Or putting out my food for the restless dead that accompany her.

Religion was created to explain things we did not understand.
Organized religion was created to rule over people who did not understand.

Until we accept that there are others out there who are not like we are, and we can let them be who they are without the need to destroy them, we will always have those who feel they need to slaughter others in the name of their god.  Until we can stop hurting each what we really need is freedom FROM religion.

Throwing Thursday - Coils

Sometimes when you're working with your kiln and you think everything is going all well and good then whamo! Once set of coils fails to heat when you're doing a bisque fire.  That's just what happened to me.  When that happens you have replace the coil.  Here's what that looks like.

Note - Please make sure you read the manufacturer's guidelines for your kiln.  This is not meant as an instructional process or directions on how to replace a burnt coil.  Please consult professional assistance when dealing with electricity.

First we have to remove the old coil.
