Throwing the Bones with Sister Sarah

Last night I attended a class at Kay Soto's store Truely Unqiue. Our Teacher was Sister Sarah and the Class was called "Throwing the Bones".

Throwing the bones is the ancient art of divination through the use of old bones. A specific collection of bones is used, each with a specific meaning. Those bones are then tossed on the ground or on an animal skin, each part having a specific meaning. The bones are then interrupted by a spirit worker or diviner.

In this particular version of Throwing the Bones, the bone set, or Bula is made up of four distinct bone pieces. The Thola, a short fat bone representing then older feminine positive. This is the foundation bone, it gives you strength. The Cohado, a long thin bone, is the younger feminine represents strength and endurance and concerns itself with the long term causes or outcomes. It can also represent chaotic or destructive female influences. The Imbay, the smallest of the bones represents the older masculine and clarifies a situation or adds credence to another bones message, depending on how it falls. The Scita, the broken bone represents the younger male positive and is the strongest bone in the reading. It highlights problems concerns or troubles plaguing the subject of the reading. The broken end often points to the bone or the field that it senses conflict in.

The field or locations on the mat, skin or ground are set up much like the peace symbol. The area is divided into three points or areas. The top right (called Earth) represents long time frames, and emotions such as love, hate, anger and base instincts as well as Ancestral spirits. The top left (called Plant) represents medium time frames. transient but long lasting situations such as career, education, relationships and finance as well as Familiar spirits. The bottom (called Animal) represents short time frames. Immediate but inconsequential concerns. Anxieties, worries and impulsive acts as well as Nature spirits.

As with many other forms of divination I have reviewed the instructor guides us to keep a journal of our throws and the outcomes. She recommends spending time casting for yourself and using situations that you already know the outcome of to see how the bones land. Find a set of bones that are unique to you and treat them as you would any other magical tool. Learn to feed and care for the bones much like you do a set of crystals or a tarot deck. Working more with a divination tool defines you as their keeper and assists in making sure that you are truly connected to the spell work you are preforming.

My thoughts on the class itself are pretty positive. Sister Sarah seems very comfortable with her art and gave a very informative representation of it. She was able to give a sample reading by asking the class to provide questions. At one point I felt as though she were directly addressing a question that I came to the class with. I have had a romantic situation which I have been helping a friend with over the past few months. I heard back that the love interest was professing undying love and a desire to move forward. With each example Sister Sarah presented in her "example" romantic reading the male influence was always separated from the female by the Cohado. She explained several times that this was showing an infidelity. As I didn't ask the bones the question directly I can not say that this specific message was intended to be an answer to my question, but it does lead me to believe that I should advise my friend to be weary of the situation.

Sister Sarah is a certified Root Worker and Psychic Reader. Her specialities include Setting Lights (Candle spells) Mojo Bags, Court Spells and Gambling Charms, Rituals for Love & Lust, Bone Diviniations and much more. Sister Sarah also has her own line of spiritual supplies such as oils, crystal bath, sache powders, incense, herbs and so much more. Her items are available at Truely Unique in Wilson, NC or at her Etsy Shop.

She is available for consultations and readings in person, by phone or email.

You can reach Sister Sarah by email at sistersarah@candlesandconjure.com, by phone at 252-525-0923 or on the web at www.candlesandconjure.com.

If you would like to learn more about Throwing the Bones, Sister Sarah has a kit with instructions and sample clay bones to practice with. She will also be at Truely Unique's Kindred Spirit and Divination Night on July 30th starting at 3:00 PM and will be available to schedule consultations.

Coming out of the Broom Closet

As many of you are aware there's a scary prospect going around now regarding DC40. Several blog postings have been done to provide more information, background and insight into this new take on an old belief system. Herescope, Nuit's Mews-ings & Secret Life of an American Working Witch to name a few.

I'm a very simple person. I like things explained very simply. Probably one of the main reasons I detest politics. Everyone has to have a five paragraph answer for something that you could easily say Yes or No to.

Here's my take on this whole business.

1. There's a group of people who believe that they want to have the United States governed under Biblical Law.
2. They are targeting areas of the US to host "Prayer Vigils" around to help this to happen.
3. Anyone not with them is against them.

And that's pretty much it. If you're non Christian. You're not in the club. They want to have this land changed from the free exchange of ideas that our forefathers intended to something that resembles a police state. No one can be different. No one is allowed to think for themselves or to differ from those statements in the Christian Bible.

Now. My first thought here was that's just crazy. No one is going to fall for this. As Americans we cherish our right to first and foremost embrace our constitutional right to free speech. No one would possibly give up their freedoms to conform to some organized mess that one super Christian would be in charge of.

Really?

I'm not trying to be dramatic here, but I'm sure if we interviewed German citizens prior to the Holocaust we would find the same sentiment. Would we see how no one would possibly believe that any one would allow a person to come to power that would strip away rights of their own citizens and then not only take their property and livelihood but finally their lives.

These are scary times we're living in. We have wars around us, an economy in the dump and unemployment at an all time high. If Hitler was right about anything it was this. In order to succeed, a group needs a common enemy.

Last night I actually had a dream that someone came to my house with torches, dragged me from my bed and burned me at the stake. Dramatic, and completely unreasonable. But ... just think for a moment. Let's say it's baby steps... let's say, Christianity is not the main religion, now practicing anything else becomes a crime, now we can start taking away rights based on a belief system that has been protected in this country since it's inception.

The mind rejects this belief. The body shudders at the thought that this could happen in our time. The heart breaks that we're seeing our fellow Americans act this way.

I think it's time for this little Witch to come out of the broom closet. I think it's time to take a stand for what you believe in. It's not black magic or negativity, it's self preservation.

If you're able to, get involved. Politics Sucks. I agree, however we need to be represented. We need to have a voice. Start locally, get involved in a local coven, reach out to your local government and see what you can do. Lend a hand in state elections, volunteer to assist with as much as you can. Get informed. They are. Join some of the Facebook Groups that have been created to get the word out on the prayer vigils. These groups are trying to create organized responses to these "prayers" in creating our own cyber circles if you will to combat the negativity that could come if they're successful.

In closing I leave you with this.

First they came for the communists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,
and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for me
and there was no one left to speak out for me.

My Thoughts on the Pagan Community

Yesterday a friend of mine, Kallan, posted a wonderful post on apathy. It really hit home for me. Living in a rural area, I had no idea of the Pagan Community that was here all along.

I shopped online and did my best to conduct myself as a good solitary. I've never been much into large groups and gatherings and believe it or not I'm really a pretty shy person. So the entire concept of joining a coven or seeking out others outside the safety of my little box was something that never entered my mind.

I commented on Kallan's blog and moved on with my crazy busy day. I did stop to consider a couple of times what I should blog about today but generally I kept my day humming along. Like so many of us out there today, the economy is killing me. Hubby and I lost our business and I spend most of my time coming up with new ways to make things or sell things to help make ends meet. Hubby is pounding the pavement looking for work and we've got the candles, the oils, the positive thoughts and of course the applications out across the US!

A little later in the day I saw a reference to another posting related to the Pagan Community. Amy over at The Realm of the Green Witch posted a similar post around how the pagan community can react to a threat. She talks about shopping in your local stores and spending the few extra pennies to help support the community instead of ordering off the internet.

Strangely enough at that same moment I got an email from Kay Soto over at Truely Unique in Wilson. I did a blog post on her shop a while back. It's about an hour from me. I attended one of her herb classes and signed up to attend one coming this Friday. I've turned that email from Kay into a note on Facebook.

I sit here and spend a lot of time on the internet trying to find places that don't charge to sell my wreaths, or hubby's dream catchers. I spend so much energy trying to find materials online, something shipped directly to my house so that I don't have to spend the gas money to drive out to pick up this or that.

I've decided that's going to change. If we want our community to be strong, we must support it. We must network. Yes, I said the N word. Not networking on the computer. Network in person. Step out from behind that monitor and attend a gathering. Offer to host a night at your local pagan store. Offer to maybe car pool on a particular night to that store that's an hour away. This is our community and it needs support.

A relationship doesn't just grow. Much like an herb garden, as all witches know, you must tend it. You have to pull the weeds. You have to water it. You have to talk to it and love it to watch it grow. The relationship we have with our religion; with our community needs that same dedication and attention.

Wheel of the Year - Wreath

My prized piece, Wheel of the Year is finally complete.

I spent the time this weekend collecting the items that I needed and arranging them with care around a grapevine wreath. The artificial flowers are recycled. At some point I'd love to be able to dry my own flowers from my garden and use them in a wreath but for now. These will have to do.

This wreath is 24inches across all natural grapevine with an assembled star in the center painted with gold paint and covered in grapevine. This is the largest size wreath I make.

So there it is. Finally complete. This piece was created for Rachel Riggs of "Silver Stars" in Fayetteville NC.

I'll be working on a Samhain Wreath next. One this same size and one the traditional door size. If you're interested in getting a wreath, I do sometimes make extras. For example I have two door size Yule Wreaths currently available.

Generally all of my wreaths tend to be custom work and I make them for the individual requesting it. Please feel free to email me with any questions or requests.

Happy Monday!

Embrace the Sparkle #8 - You Are What You Eat

Eating right is not only good for your waistline, it's great for treating BiPolar Disorder. I'm reading a new book called "The Natural Medicine Guide to BiPolar Disorder" I was able to pick it up for only 2.50 on Paperbackswap.com.

I read to really great bits last night which really made me sit back and think. First, one of the main side effects from aspartame is depression. Apparently Aspartame alters amino acid ratios and blocks serotonin production. Articles can be found all over Google related to this topic. One link states that Aspartame is toxic to humans.

The next part I read was related to vitamins. There are several mood related effects to having vitamin deficiencies.

Ascorbic Acid - Vitamin C - Being deficient can result in depression, hysteria, confusion, lassitude and hypochondriasis

Biotin - Being deficient can result in depression, extreme lassitude and somnolence.

Folic Acid - Being deficient can result in depression, apathy, insomnia, irritability, forgetfulness, delirium, dementia and psychosis.

Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) - Being deficient can result in depression, apathy, anxiety, irritability, memory loss, personality changes, emotional instability.

Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) - Being deficient can result in depression, insomnia, mental sluggishness.

Vitamin B3 (Niacin/Niacinamide) - Being deficient can result in depression, mania, anxiety, apathy, hyper-irritablity, emotional instability, memory and concentration problems.

Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic acid) - Being deficient can result in depression, restlessness, irritability, fatigue and quarrelsomeness

Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) - Being deficient can result in depression, irritability, nervousness, insomnia, poor dream recall.

Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) - Being deficient can result in depression, mood swings, irritability, confusion, memory loss, hallucinations, delusions, paranoia and psychotic states.

Source - Depression & Natural Medicine: A Nutritional Approach to Depression and Mood Swings.

Learning about vitamins is an eye opening experience. For example, I spent 5 years taking Fibromyalgia medicines. Pain killers and seizure medicines. Each of those medicines caused other issues, like edema for example, which then I had to take a water pill for, which then stripped out all my potassium so I had to take another pill to fix that. Pretty soon, most of my prescriptions for treating the side effects of other medicines. I was extremely surprised to learn that removing preservatives from my diet and increasing my Vitamin D and Magnesium would take away the pain. I have been off meds and Fibro pain free for over a year.

Hippocrates said it and it still holds true... Let they food be thy medicine and as always,

Embrace the Sparkle.

You, Me & Religion Interview

Just wanted to share my interview with the website "You, Me & Religion" Interview.

You can find it here.

I was very excited back in March when I got an email asking me to participate in this web site. A lot has changed in my life since then. As many of you know we no longer breed Chihauhaus and Hubby is looking to get back into the corporate world.

He's been applying for jobs all over the US but something interesting happened today. Today was my Grandmother's 96th birthday. She pretty much raised me until I was 5 or 6. She was talking to me today and I couldn't hear her so I leaned in to listen. She said, Did he find a job? I said, no grandma not yet. She reached out and grabbed my arm and said "I don't want you'all to move". I nearly cried.

Happy Birthday Grandma

So today, has been a big day. I sold four of my Pagan Wreaths that can now be found at Silver Star's in Fayetteville. I was published on You, Me & Religion and I found out just how very important I am to a little ole 96 year old lady in Hood Swamp NC.

It's so nice to be loved.

Please take a moment and tell those in your life how much they mean to you.

Aladdin's Eatery - Raleigh

Finding new and interesting places to eat can sometimes be a challenge. This weekend I was prompted to try a new restaurant by Groupon. Groupon is a way of sharing savings or deals with people via email by signing up for discounts in your area. Emails are then sent with updates on what businesses are offering deals. This deal offers $15 dollars worth of food at Aladdin’s Eatery for only $7. At time of this writing this deal was still available. 8 hours remain in the purchase time 1,548 actually purchased this discount and based on my experience there it’s TOTALLY worth it.

Aladdin’s Eatery has amazing décor. The inside is warm and friendly. The colors are amazing. I was greeted by wonderful wait staff that seated us quickly. We were escorted to our table passing by an amazing dessert case.

This wonderful restaurant boasts of nothing Pre-Packaged, multiple vegetarian options with fruit that is fresh and not frozen. They have dine, carryout and catering available.

If you leave Aladdin’s eatery hungry you have no one to blame but yourself. The portions are HUGE and the prices extremely reasonable.

My dinner guest ordered Aladdin’s Lamb Rolled with a side salad. The salad was huge; it had lots of lettuce feta cheese and a nice vinegar dressing with chopped tomatoes and onions. The “roll” was about a foot long pita and was packed with lots of lamb, lettuce, turnips, pickles and tahini sauce.

I ordered the Falaffel Pocket. This thing was gigantic. It was a full dinner size salad stuffed into a huge pita with vegetarian patties made from chick peas, fava beans, parsley and scallions. They are fried in peanut oil and served with tahini yogurt sauce. It was absolutely amazing. I love falafel and have tried it in many locations around the state. This was by far one of the best I’ve had.

Over all a complete success! If you’re looking for a new dining experience I highly recommend visiting Aladdin’s Eatery at Briar Creek.

Happy Eating!

Scrying - Wrap Up

Welp It's been a while since I blogged about the scrying. What have I learned?

I have no patience. I have very little attention span and I get bored really easily.

I spent a few hours, not many, trying to figure out how it all worked. Reading was fine and I enjoyed that but when it came down to actually finding the time to "STOP" moving and sit down to do the work, I failed miserably.

So, I'm not a scryer. I tried the mirror, which according to Hubby I had limited success with. I was able to answer a few of his questions with something that he had asked with something that seemed to form an answer anyway. It was really very hazy to me, nothing solid.

I then tried my lovely crystal ball from Pagan Stuff Cheap. It looks great! And probably works great too, for someone who will sit down and do it. I couldn't really see anything in the crystal. It does look fabulous on my alter tho.

So I believe that my calling may not be necessarily related to divination, perhaps I'm more of a crafty witch. I've been working on my wreaths lately and finished quite a few of them. Along with Hubby's wands and dream-catchers; I think we have the Pagan decorating down to a science.

You can see more of my crafty wares here in this Facebook Album. I do make crocheted afghans, quilts, dog blankets, baby blankets and all sorts of other things for sale. I will also custom make items, if you'd like a wreath/blanket with a specific color scheme or what have you. I do not have an Etsy shop, so I just use email and Paypal for purchasing.

Feel free to contact me if you'd like to buy any of these items.

Sage Advice - Herb Class - Kay Soto

Good Morning everyone! Last night I attended my first herb class with Kay Soto at Truely Unique. This is one of the many events hosted by Truely Unique.

If you're looking for a place where you sit down and take notes and read from a book, this is not the class for you. I attended with hubby and two very nice ladies. Kay cooked some butternut squash and had fresh tomatoes from the Community Garden. We sat down at the kitchen table surrounded by jars and jars of herbs.

As we began, Kay explained that I had shown up on the 3rd class of the series and the most difficult one. Nice, just let me show up on test day!!

This "class" was held more like a discussion between friends. We chatted about herbal folklore and how herbs were used not only in Pagan circles but also in Christian as well. There were handouts that we were given that had lists of God/dess favorite herbs and how those herbs can be substituted safely for other herbs.

I think the most interesting thing I learned was that there is folklore that says that rosemary works best if taken from your neighbors yard, it's used for worship and for wedding bouquets. It symbolizes love and loyalty. We reviewed the Doctrine of Signatures, which says that plants that look, smell or have a color likeness to a particular body part, they are used to treat that body part. Such as Lungwort for example has spots much like the spots on lungs and it thought to treat those type maladies.

Overall it was a really good class. In her handouts Kay recommends to start your journey into herbalism by planting three herbs and then taking the time to learn everything there is about them. Use them in kitchen magic, in teas and in baths. She recommends to find 7 different sources before using any herb. (Good idea)

I'm really looking forward to attending the Summer Cooking with Herbs Class on the 29th. As well as the Kindred Spirit & Divination Night on the 30th.

I've also learned that Osvaldo (Kay's Hubby) is an Advanced Second Degree Reiki Practitioner, which is very interesting because as you know I've been working on my Reiki studies and just finished a chapter on finding a teacher. It said, do not worry if you cannot find a teacher, when you are ready one will present itself. (Interesting....)

Now time for me to get back to work on those wreaths...

Until next time, Namaste and Blessed Be

Truely Unique - Wilson NC

Thanks to a suggestion by Tina, a friend on Facebook, I visited a little shop today that was indeed Truely Unique. The owner Kay greeted me from the back of the cottage, with a chipper Hello there!

I walked around the entry way and found an amazing collection of items.

The first to catch my attention were the crystal balls. As some of you may know I recently purchased a crystal ball from "Pagan Stuff Cheap" and just love it.

The crystals at Truely Unique are amazing. The sizes are extraordinary and the selection is amazing.

As I walked around the shop, it was really homey. I felt completely at ease here. There was nothing dark or negative to be found. The entire house had been converted into an amazing shop. The kitchen housed the herbs and teas. Kay is a third generation herbalist as well as the owner operator of the location. She sells herbs, teas and even a vegetarian dip that I'm eager to give a try. The store has over 250 different herbs and blends available. They even ship!

While chatting with Kay, she offered me a lovely cup of tea, which was completely delightful. I have to admit, a wonderful welcoming environment.

She chatted with me for nearly an hour about the shop's class schedule and some of the activities that they plan to have going on through out the remainder of the year. I was a bit surprised that there was this thriving pagan community so close to me. Kay mentioned that they have a community garden and offer a divination night where folks come around to offer insights from beyond to those eagar to know more about the past present or future.

For the last 6 years I've been looking for a group and this one was here just a short drive away.

Kay went on to tell me about the Monster Bash that's coming up to benefit the Spiral Scout Troop that they've helped to sponsor.

Here's a few of their upcoming events:
Herb Class with Kay - July 7th - $5 fee

Drawing Down The Moon - Open Circle - July 14th from 8:30 - 11:30 - Free

Candle Magic with Rosemary Grace - July 16th 6:00 - 9:00 - $10 fee

You can find links to the great events being put on at Truely Unique by checking out their Events page on Facebook.

Hubby even volunteered to take me to whatever event I wanted to attend as he felt that of all religions "Pagans" seem to be the most accepting group. I tend to agree.

At home now I sit looking over the photos I took and sipping on a cup of the Fairy Delight Tea she sent me home with and I have to say, it was a wonderful experience. The shop delightful, the hostess amazing and the tea, well the tea is Truely Unique.

Truely Unique can be found on the web at http://truelyunique.com/, a Blog and an Etsy Shop.

Fayetteville Trip

Yesterday morning hubby and I took off on the motorcycle (this time with sunscreen) to Fayetteville NC.

We found two little shops we wanted to go have a look at. Our journey took us to the Fayetteville Flea Mall on Raeford Road.

Our first stop was Silver Sister's Cottage. When I walked in there was a small group of three or four sitting around a table chatting about where to find the best little trinkets and gifts for the shop. I was welcomed in and offered assistance. I spent much of my time admiring the homey decor that made me feel like I was in the basement of a very experienced witch and rummaging through her treasures.

Here are some pictures from the place.

This was a really great little shop. I was looking for a new pentacle but one didn't find me in this shop. You can find Silver Sister's Cottage on Facebook. The owner, Tracy Bonner has a page on Facebook and has really done a great job with her shop. Silver Sister's Cottage will be participating in NC Pagan Pride this year. I plan to attend as well.

As we continued around the flea mall we found another little shop called "Silver Stars"

Silver Star's shop is very different from Sisters. This shop is light and fun. It has lots of dream catchers and happiness around. The shop is nestled in the back of the building but when you see the twinkle lights and stars around you know you're in the right spot.

I managed to have a look at the jewelry case and again, my pentacle escaped me. But I shall find it soon. One of the cutest things about this shop is their spell kits. As I've mentioned in the past I'm not huge on spell kits, but this little drawer with the types of spells on the outside and inside with the little baggies filled with spell components was simply adorable.

Silver Stars can be found on Facebook as well.

Over all a wonderful trip and a major score in finding too very great looking shops. If we end up moving to Fayetteville I can see myself spending a great deal of time down at these shops. Maybe even I'll send them one of my homemade wreaths to sell in their shop.

Next week I'm visting "Truly Unique" in Wilson. Can't wait to see what they have for me there!
