Monday Meditation - Empathic Eating

A few years ago I switched over to a Whole Food Plant Based No Oil (WFPBNO) lifestyle.  I switched to this from being Vegetarian/Pescatarian for many years. I had several reasons for this switch. I wanted to be healthier and all the science currently points to having little to no animal products in a diet is better for the body.  It changed my life.

The Standard American Diet (SAD) is just that, sad.  It is full of calories, no nutrients as well as being cruel and inhuman. From the treatment of the animals to the treatment of the planet, our SAD lifestyle is destroying our world.

I recently wrote an article on being an empath and food. Many people I know claim this title as well. They say that can feel the energy of other beings.  They can touch a wallet and know who had it. They can touch a ring and feel the happiness of a wedding day.  I often wonder if they feel the pain and suffering of the animals they eat.  Are they able to feel the sadness of the mother cows who have their babies taken away? (Trigger warning - this link shows a video of a cow losing her calf and the suffering she endures.)

I have changed a lot about my life.  When I was asked originally if I was an ethical vegan, I would always say, no.  I'm vegan for my health. I found that as I stopped drinking milk, eating cheese and other dairy, I was able to connect more with animals on a higher level. I was able to connect more to my gifts, including precognition and my aura readings.  Today people freak about about a dog left in a hot car for an hour but don't seem to care about calves being left in boxes for eight to sixteen weeks, deprived of their mother's milk.  Instead feed formula to intentionally make them anemic for the "best" tasting veal. (Trigger warning - this link is to an article that gives the exact details of what a young male calf endures)

It just boggles the mind what we as human beings believe is ok to do to other animals. We often hear that serial killers start out killing animals before moving on to humans. Let's think about what we're doing each time we have a burger.  I often watch the news and am dismayed at how awful we can be to one another as a species. Maybe all that suffering we're eating is finally making itself known in our actions.

I know I'll hear a lot of complaints about how, this is my choice, and I shouldn't impose my choice on others.  I agree.  I don't want to impose my choice on others. I would like others to choose compassion on their own.

As you know I'll be switching over to reviewing only e-copies of books shortly.  I will miss handling the books but the amount of trash that I had piling up for all the shipping was just overwhelming.  I will be doing a giveaway for the remaining physical books that actually arrive as well as asking my publishers to provide giveaway copies shipped directly to my winner's homes going forward for all giveaways.

My review copy as a medium sized soft cover book that would easily travel in a larger handbag or backpack.  This book has an extensive index! I really love a good index. What good is a book if you can't fine what you're looking for. This one does not disappoint. I jumped in looking up a couple of my favorite deities and found them quickly.  Never underestimate the power of a good index.

This book is divided up by the months of the year.  Each month has an assortment of deities within.  January contains Sophia, Skadi, Xi Wangmu, Athena and Brigid for example.  I was pleasantly surprised to see that there are some of the more common deities such as Kalli and Diana but other deities like Maeve, Tiamat and the Spider Woman were also represented.  The author did a really great job going across several cultures to pull together an assortment of Goddess figures that can appeal to a wide audience.

I quickly jumped to my month to see what Skye Alexander had in store for those born in February. February (each month for that matter) begin with an brief introduction into the month. In my case a poem from Oscar Fay Adams was on the top of the chapter page with some beautiful birch trees in the background.  We begin with Saraswati. The author provides insight on when we should invite her and provides a Herstory of the deity.  She tells us about the symbols and corresponds as well as reasons to work with her.  There is a section on how to invite her as well.  For February we have four Goddesses presented each with the same outline as above.  Joining Saraswati is Lilith, Nut and Aurora.

I couldn't review this book without seeking out Hecate. I found her quickly in this book thanks to that handy dandy index in the back.  Hecate was found in October!  Where else? She was joined by Frigg, Ma'at, Hera and Aphrodite.  The author recommends we work with Hecate from October 30 - Nov 5.  She gives us a brief history of Hecate and but refers to her as an elder Goddess. Despite all the drawings and writings of Hecate, people still like to refer to her as a crone. Hecate has never been anything presented other than a maiden.  I would like to see this reflect more in this newly written books.  I did like the way the author said to leave veggies as an offering.  This appeals to the vegan in me, however we know historically that offerings to deities were less compassionate.

Overall I felt this is a great book for a house warming party or maybe for a graduation gift. It is certainly female positive in its language.  I think this would be a great addition to any library focusing on female empowerment or a great way to bring the feminine divine anything any traditional magical library.

Monday Meditation - We Inter-Are

Another great thought from The Art of Living by Thich Nhat Hanh was something that really struck me.  He says in the book that we are "Inter-are".

We are connected to each other more than we really think.  Just as we cannot take the soil out of the flower or the sunlight out of the flower we cannot remove others from ourselves. If we tried to take the sun away, the flower is no longer a flower.  We cannot separate the water from a wave.  We see the wave, we see the flower.  The flower without the sun would not be a flower.  It took me a while to see that no matter how hard I tried to remove myself from my family, they are still there.  A part of me.
I have the choice to stop the suffering. I do not have to participate in the negativity of the daily grind. I can stop. I can breathe.  I can learn that we are all connected and we - inter-are.  This was a massive lesson for me. If you have the opportunity I highly recommend listening to Thich Nhat Hanh speak. I'll add another video at the bottom of this entry.

His poem gives a glimpse about what he means by we inter-are.

You are me, and I am you.
Isn’t it obvious that we “inter-are”?
You cultivate the flower in yourself,
so that I will be beautiful.
I transform the garbage in myself,
so that you will not have to suffer.
I support you;
you support me.
I am in this world to offer you peace;
you are in this world to bring me joy.  ~ by Thich Nhat Hanh (Link)

I received a cute little hard cover book to review.  It is very small.  It could easily be tossed in a handbag or backpack for on the go reading.  The cover is vibrant and whimsical and looks has images of our typical divination methods.  From runes, to the moon the cover leaves no doubt as to what this book is about.

This is not a how to book. It is one of those "spell a day" or "inspirational quote" books that can be found in most gift shops. The author invites us to pick up this book when we're sick with our tea (as if a witch could ever be sick of tea!) or frustrated  by our tarot cards!

Unlike most books this book has the messages on both sides of the pages.  I found that to be a bit confusing.  I mean which message is the universe really trying to give me?  One?  Both?  The pages are a muted color but the messages are bright.  You'll find quotes like - Your positivity attracts good things to you and Today, it is up to you to create the happiness you long for.

Overall a cute book to give to a friend who is moving or maybe looking for a change in their life or even a witchling starting out their travels into the world of divination.  I found the quotes to be fun, positive and well suited for all ages.

Monday Meditation: Witchcraft & Buddhism - The Fluffy Bunny Effect

I've become a fluffy bunny.  I look back at all the posts I used to make about my angry Goddess Hecate Brimo and how she was going to be a destroyer of all those who had wronged me. I

(artist Georgi Mishev)

I saw her riding in with her mighty torches, dagger in hand ready to bring forth justice for me. To in a sense destroy all those who were not aligned with my way of thinking. I saw this metaphorically. I followed Hecate as a light bringer. One who has the keys to ancient knowledge that I needed in order to go forward in my life. I was angry, so Brimo was who I identified with.

Today I'm feeling much more centered in my life. I don't practice as much as I used to, spells and rituals but I do meditate.  I feel that even if I'm not chanting her name I am still calling upon some of the other representations that she is know for. I love this list here.

Some new titles I'm thinking of identifying with:

Alkimos: Strong/Stout/Brave/Powerful
Ameibousa/Amibousa: One that Transforms
Angelos/Angele: Messenger
Aregos: Helper
Erototokeia: Producing Love/Bearer of Love
Eukoline: Good-Tempered

There are so many  more facets to this life we have in front of us. Learning to become more and not hold on to those things that cause suffering is something that we all need to learn. On the hunt for a fight, looking for someone to defend is just furthering suffering. Instead I choose to offer compassion. I choose to offer understanding and be there for those who need it. I choose to send out, light and love.  There I said it.  Light and love.  For all those years, I was quick to say, I'm not all light and love.  Well I know why. I was so full of suffering that I couldn't see the way to give that light and love to others, because I hadn't given it to myself.

Today I choose to love myself. Today I choose to be a fluffy bunny.

This consists of a brief introduction to the signs with an overview of each and then with perforated pages that can be torn out, framed and hanged as wall art. Each of the pages has a glossy finish and there are three styles to choose from within the book.  The overview provided is written in an easy to read format and I believe is simple and easy to follow.

Overall an interesting take on creating a book out of artist contributions for the purpose of tearing out and hanging on a wall.

Here are some of the designs included.

Monday Meditation - Transformation

Monday Meditation - Transformation

I'm going to try to write a little something each Monday. Maybe something that I have meditated on or something I feel I need to mediate on.

I was recently reading a book by Thich Nhat Hanh called The Art of Living.  Within the pages are some amazing bits of information that really changed my life.  This next passage was one that I really enjoyed:

Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier, the father of modern chemistry, is the French scientist who discovered that “nothing is created, nothing is destroyed, everything is in transformation.” I sometimes wonder if Lavoisier was able to live his daily life in accordance with this truth. Lavoisier lived at the time of the French Revolution, and at the age of fifty he was killed at the guillotine. He had a wonderful wife who loved him very much and became a scientist too. But, I wonder, if Lavoisier, who had this deep insight that nothing can be destroyed, was afraid of dying the day he walked up to the guillotine? The insight and discoveries that Lavoisier made in his lifetime continue to resonate to this day. So Lavoisier has not died. His wisdom is still there. He continues in new forms. When we say that nothing is created, nothing is destroyed, everything transforms, this also applies to your body, your feelings, your perceptions, your mental formations, your consciousness.

Each day we have the opportunity to take what we learn and share it with someone else. Be it an insightful legacy such as Thich Nhat Hanh or Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier. We have a legacy that we can pass on to others around us. They may not be our children; as a monk Thich Nhat Hanh has no children yet, he passes his legacy to millions around the world. I am not a monk, I am still a teacher. I share my views daily with those around me. Either by words, action or deed.  Just as you do.  What will be your legacy?  Will it be one of peace and compassion?

I asked myself this over this past year and it led me to the path I am in today. I want to be someone who shares with others. I want to show compassion to every living being on this planet. For years I have been a warrior, a fighter for those who cannot fight. Today I know that those who I was fighting for did not benefit from my fight. In fact my fight only brought about more suffering for all involved. Instead my direction would be better served by showing compassion to those in need. Supporting them. Helping them. Fighting only leads to more fighting and at some point there has to be one person to lay down the sword. I have transformed myself into a new person. I pause before I speak. I wait.  I breath.  With that I am learning to be that person that I really want to be.

Where are you at today?  What do you want your legacy to be? How will you transform your actions?

As always I'll start out with a review of the physical book.  This is a beautiful book. The cover is vibrant and has two lovely photos with a place setting with outlines the houses of the zodiac.  It's a hefty book and is large. I would think too large to put in a bag for a quick read on the go.  There is a lengthy index index in the back with references to pages for specific dishes, astrological signs and ingredients.

As someone who is strictly whole food plant based I grabbed this book with hungry hands and a skeptical mind.  It is rare now to find dishes that don't include some form of animal product, sugar or oil.  The majority of recipes out there are overly processed and lack any attention to a real healthy meal. I have to say, even though this book does contain books with animal flesh, I was able to find some that fit into my lifestyle.   Of course I bounced directly to the back of the book looking for the recipes for Pisces!  I was not disappointed.

Pisces is described as the intuitive chef.  The author has this to say:

Mystical Pisces are represented by two celestial fish. Pisceans are truly enigmatic, compassionate souls with vivid imaginations and a fantastically unique sense of humor.  Pisceans live in their own private world as the undercover start of their own life novel.  Fluent in nonverbal communication these intuitive water signs soulfully connect with the messages emoted through music, art poetry and film.  Mutable Pisces can adapt to any environment, though they are also psychic sponges who need to regularly retreat from the world.  Every celestial fish has at least one ritualistic escape hatch they swim to - be popcorn and move, their yoga mat or the local dive bar.

Wow!  Great intro.  I'm hooked (pun intended)

As if she read my mind the first dish was Chili Masala Tofu Scramble.  While not considered a whole food, tofu is minimally processed and it is something that I eat from time to time.  Looking through the recipe I only had to remove the olive oil and it was something I could eat.  Cool 1 for 1!

Each chapter of the book is dedicated to one sign of the zodiac.  Continuing through my chapter I found several dishes that I could either eat directly or pull out an ingredient here or there to make it compliant.  The Ginger Peach Smoothie for example was easy to fix up with a simple plant based yogurt replacement. The Buddah Bowl was great minus the avocado oil, but the Premiere Popcorn nearly gave me a stroke just reading the ingredients. While not my taste, I can say that I cannot imagine eating popcorn with an entire pound of bacon; someone out there is sure to say it is exactly what they're looking for.

The photos in this book were amazing. I loved the color and simple settings used to demonstrate each dish. I was disappointed that each recipe did not include a photo.  As someone who does a lot of recipes search for my site Real Rations, I can tell you that photos sell the dish. You have to have one to demonstrate the final product and I really think this book could have used that.

Overall a great book with a lots of recipes for all sorts of tastes.  Something for everyone including some dishes for the vegans out there, which is hard to come by.  I was very pleased to see all sorts of tastes represented.

Happy 2020

It has been an amazing year.  Last year this time I was in New Mexico living on some property that we were considering buying. We were nearly committed when we had some issues with our property in NC that led us back here.  We ended up coming back to NC where we have been for 2019.

Photo Credit - Elijah Trent Olson

We took this year to see if we really wanted to be back in NM or if NC was where we could make our home.  We had ups and downs and took the time to really appreciate what NC has to offer. We reconnected with family members and learned that sometimes you just can't mend fences and you have to be ok with letting some people go.

We spent a year dedicated to learning about foods from Asia. We learned to use chopsticks and how to make sushi.  We learned as much as we could about different spices from that area of the world and traveled across the continent vicariously via our food adventures.  This next year we're going to explore Latin cuisine and we're learning Spanish!

We'll continue to share our recipes on Real Rations and as you can tell I renamed this blog and will continue to share my witchy book reviews, recipes and exploration in to all things wellness on To Live Whole.

In October I went to HexFest and had a wonderful time with Sorita d'Este. I explored some new foods and ended up adding mushrooms, peppers and onions to our dietary guidelines!

Eli and I found Buddhism and began meditating. We are really feeling good now. Eli is down to almost no pain at all and all my manias have passed.  I have completely migrated into menopause and feel healthier than I have in my entire life.

So we're ready now.  Come on 2020 - Let's get this party started.
