Celebrations of Fire - Imbolc

Imbloc is the time when we celebrate the earth's return to spring. Depending on the Wicca one follows, will determine the type of celebration.

In groups there are organized ceremonies where the High Priestess may light candles and offer wine and cakes to Brigid, this website offers an example.

A good history can be found here.

Being Solitary, I simply bring in my seeds for the year, place them on my altar and proceed with a calling of the quarters. After that, I light my candles and finish my ritual. I would love to attend a big celebration one day. Until that time, I'll practice alone.

So what's this whole calling the quarters business?

In some ceremonies, the practitioners start the circle or ceremony by Calling the Quarters. Or inviting the Guardians of the Watchtowers to come and protect or witness their rites. At the end those Guardians are thanked for their presence and bid farewell.

In the movies we see usually some out of control person demanding the presence of the spiritual forces that be and command them to watch. We see this over and over again. To me I do not believe this is the appropriate way to interact with the Guardians. When requesting the presence or protection of the Guardians; One should be very respectful and send those positive thoughts that one would send out in any other setting.

Rituals can seem overly complicated and cumbersome to do. As a Solitary Witch, I have found that I'm able to practice more and try to get the right feeling instead of only looking for the right words to say.

Some believe that you need to actually physically cast a circle and walk the circle three times to begin before even beginning to invoke the guardians. Being more eclectic, I believe that what you do pure of heart, mind and soul will work for you. Just pace yourself, clear your mind and speak from the heart. The guardians will come.

For those that really need a ritual to go by, I found this really simple calling of the Quarters below. Some spice it up a bit by referring to the elements each direction represents as below.

I'm sure a simple welcome, such as:
Facing East say, Guardians of the Watchtowers of the East, we invoke and welcome thee
Facing South say, Guardians of the Watchtowers of the South, we invoke and welcome thee
Facing West say, Guardians of the Watchtowers of the West, we invoke and welcome thee
Facing North say, Guardians of the Watchtowers of the North, we invoke and welcome thee

I found this pretty simple example on the website Jesterbear.com:

Invocation

East:

Guardians of the Watchtowers of the East,
Powers of Air,
We invoke you and call you.
By the Air that is Her breath,
Be here now!
Hail and welcome!

Guardians of the Watchtowers of the South,
Powers of Fire,
We invoke you and call you.
By the Fire that is Her spirit,
Be here now!
Hail and welcome!
West:

Guardians of the Watchtowers of the West,
Powers of Water,
We invoke you and call you.
By the Water that is Her living womb,
Be here now!
Hail and welcome!
North:

Guardians of the Watchtowers of the North,
Powers of Earth,
We invoke you and call you.
By the Earth that is Her body,
be here now!
Hail and welcome!
Dismissal

East:

Guardians of the Watchtowers of the East,
Powers of Air,
We thank you for your presence
And ask for your blessing.
Hail and Farewell!
South:

Guardians of the Watchtowers of the South,
Powers of Fire,
We thank you for your presence
And ask for your blessing.
Hail and Farewell!
West:

Guardians of the Watchtowers of the West,
Powers of Water,
We thank you for your presence
And ask for your blessing.
Hail and Farewell!
North:

Guardians of the Watchtowers of the North,
Powers of Earth,
We thank you for your presence
And ask for your blessing.
Hail and Farewell!

I hope this helps someone.

No Name Calling Week

This week is No Name Calling week. This is very interesting because of the recent high number of LGBT suicides that were listed in the media. After my post on Ricky Martin's video, I find it very interesting that this comes about now.

LGBT people have been tormented for the majority of their lives; if out and lost and forgotten if in their closets. Each day we have to decide if we want to expose a hidden part of our lives to other people around us. Something as simple as telling a coworker about going to a movie changes from a simple discussion to a life or death decision. So many times I've heard, "I don't hate gay people, they just need to not put their lifestyle in my face." Really? So is that a picture of your wife on your desk? We can assume so much about people but we rarely assume that that person is someone who is another human being just like yourself. We all want to be loved and accepted for who we are. LGBT people are no different.

It all begins at home, show me a person who hurls hateful remarks and calls names and I'll show you a person who was not shown love or understanding as a child. We can fix this. I'm adding the link to GLSENs press release for No Name Calling Week as well as a link to their Facebook Page.

Take a moment to check them out!

The Best Thing About Me Is You

So Ricky Martin is gay. Why do we care? I think that it's interesting that he has finally chose to come out. Looking back he always did make my gaydar go bing bing bing. Not to mention a few other things. But then I've always been told I had a thing for gay guys. (Rolling Eyes) OK OK so it's true, It's not my fault, the ones I've run into have been extremely handsome, and Yes, my dear Ricky is one of those very handsome gay men.

I ended up trolling over to youtube to have a look at his new video. The song is called "The Best Thing About Me Is You". Watching him in the video, I couldn't help relating my recent return to my pagan calling to his "change in philosophy". Perhaps I related to the song on such a personal level that I even found myself debating his honesty in putting out this type of video now, after just coming out. Was this a marketing ploy? Was this really how he feels?

Honestly, who are we to judge his intentions. I think it's a great song, and the light in his eyes and smile on his face, to me says enough. I've decided to embed the video here for your enjoyment.

Doesn't it just make you smile?

Killing Us Softly....

I've never been much of a feminist. I've always felt as though in my particular dynamic that there is a feminine and a masculine. That masculine was in charge so to speak, but held to a higher standard. Open my door, order my dinner, treat me like a lady. I in turn, treat "him" as the "man of the house". In the south, it's an easy dynamic to keep. I really don't want to talk to the salesman at the car lot or the folks that drop buy our house to sell us vinyl siding. Good for me that's "his" job. I also don't clean up dog poop or anything else gross... yes that's a man's job. So I too am guilty of gender based bias. I didn't realize how ingrained it is in our society until my lovely daughter send out a Facebook update that said, Hey, check this out.

It's a video serious of 5 parts called "Killing Us Softly", I am absolutely amazed at how embedded sexual discrimination is in our advertising. This is why women feel the way they do and why women of color are treated the way they are. I was appalled and amazed at the same time. I never saw it. I'm going to add the first part of this series here. Please take a moment to view all five parts.

Healing Fibromyalgia - With Food

WebMd defines Fibromyalgia as the most common arthritis-related illness after osteoarthritis. Still, it is often misdiagnosed and misunderstood. Fibromyalgia is a rheumatic condition. Its characteristics include widespread muscle and joint pain and fatigue as well as other symptoms. Fibromyalgia can lead to depression and social isolation.

I was diagnosed with Fibromalgia in February of 2008. I started on a treatment of Gabapentin and eventually Tramadol. The Gabapentin made my arms and legs fill with fluid, which I then had to take a water pill for, which striped all my potassium out of my body which I had to take an extra pill for. I was up to 1000mg a day of Gabapentin when it stopped working. My doctor switched me to Tramadol, which worked wonderfully. I had no side effects at all. I was able to move again. I was taking 800 mg a day. One Friday I "forgot" to refill my prescription and I thought, oh well I'll get it on Monday. MISTAKE!! I, my friends had become addicted. I had some of the worse symptoms I had ever experienced. Restless legs, no sleep, my bones felt like ice. I had to take 3 or 4 showers a night. It was unbearable. I thought, boy my Fibro is really acting up.

Two months later I was feeling so much better with my weight loss that I thought, well I'll just try to stop taking the Tramadol now. I was off everything else and I thought it would be easy. I started cutting down my pills and was down to only 2 per day. That's only 50 mg. I started to feel that ice in my bones again and thought, you know, if I didn't know any better, I'd say I was having withdrawal symptoms. Well guess what?? I was right!

Tramadol is extremely addictive and extremely hard to get off of. They compare it to getting off Heroin.

This is a quote on the symptoms:

"The atypical withdrawal symptoms are probably related to tramadol's effect on serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake. Symptoms may include those of SSRI discontinuation syndrome, such as anxiety, depression, anguish, severe mood swings, aggressiveness, brain "zaps", electric-shock-like sensations throughout the body, paresthesias, sweating, palpitations, restless legs syndrome, sneezing, insomnia, tremors, and headache among others. In most cases, tramadol withdrawal will set in 12–20 hours after the last dose, but this can vary. Tramadol withdrawal lasts longer than that of other opioids; seven days or more of acute withdrawal symptoms can occur as opposed to typically three or four days for other codeine analogues. It is recommended that patients physically dependent on pain killers take their medication regularly to prevent onset of withdrawal symptoms and this is particularly relevant to tramadol because of its SSRI and SNRI properties, and, when the time comes to discontinue their tramadol, to do so gradually over a period of time that will vary according to the individual patient and dose and length of time on the drug"

It took me seven days to get the zaps in my brain to stop. The pain in my arms and legs was indescribable.

I can only say that if you are on Tramadol, I hope that you're able to get off it so much easier than I.

This is yet another reason why we need to go back to healing with food. You can cure most of the symptoms of Fibro just by increasing your Vitamin D levels. There are several articles out there on healing with food. Here's one I found today.
Your body wants nutrients. These pains are your body's way of saying, HEY STOP IT!

If anyone has questions related to Fibro or how to use nutrition to help heal your body, just reach out. I'm happy to share.

Guest Blogger - The Secret Life of the American Working Witch

I'd like to send out a big thank you to Kallan of The Secret Life of the American Working Witch for asking me to be a guest blogger on her blog.

I love talking about my struggles and my successes around diet and nutrition. I love to share the information I have gained and to be an example to others out there about how you can heal yourself with food.

I've mentioned several times that I am now off all prescriptions medications and heck, I hardly ever even have a headache now. I wouldn't be here in this condition today without learning more about the food we eat and what it does to our bodies.

Thanks so much again for allowing me to be a guest blogger and for your wonderful Inspiring Pagan Award.

Going Organic?

How to get Organic foods?

1. Grown Your Own
2. Ask your grocer
3. Shop at local farms

It is extremely important for our children and for our future to stop poisoning ourselves with chemicals and GMOs. KidsOrganic.com has a wonderful post about the Seventeen Foods that you MUST have Organic.

They list baby food, strawberries and rice just to name three. Have a look at their page and help support getting your life back.

Can't afford organic? I cut 150.00 a month on prescription drugs out of my budget simply by improving the food I put in my body. Remember Garbage In Garbage Out.

Top Ten Reasons to Go Organic

Top 10 Reasons to Support Organic in the 21st Century
Source: Alan Greene, MD (Organic Trade Association), Bob Scowcroft (Organic Farming Research Foundation), Sylvia Tawse (Fresh Ideas Group)

1. Reduce The Toxic Load: Keep Chemicals Out of the Air, Water, Soil and our Bodies
Buying organic food promotes a less toxic environment for all living things. With only 0.5 percent of crop and pasture land in organic, according to USDA that leaves 99.5 percent of farm acres in the U.S. at risk of exposure to noxious agricultural chemicals.

Our bodies are the environment so supporting organic agriculture doesn’t just benefit your family, it helps all families live less toxically.

2. Reduce if Not Eliminate Off Farm Pollution
Industrial agriculture doesn’t singularly pollute farmland and farm workers; it also wreaks havoc on the environment downstream. Pesticide drift affects non-farm communities with odorless and invisible poisons. Synthetic fertilizer drifting downstream is the main culprit for dead zones in delicate ocean environments, such as the Gulf of Mexico, where its dead zone is now larger than 22,000 square kilometers, an area larger than New Jersey, according to Science magazine, August, 2002.

3. Protect Future Generations
Before a mother first nurses her newborn, the toxic risk from pesticides has already begun. Studies show that infants are exposed to hundreds of harmful chemicals in utero. In fact, our nation is now reaping the results of four generations of exposure to agricultural and industrial chemicals, whose safety was deemed on adult tolerance levels, not on children’s. According to the National Academy of Science, “neurologic and behavioral effects may result from low-level exposure to pesticides.” Numerous studies show that pesticides can adversely affect the nervous system, increase the risk of cancer, and decrease fertility.

4. Build Healthy Soil
Mono-cropping and chemical fertilizer dependency has taken a toll with a loss of top soil estimated at a cost of $40 billion per year in the U.S., according to David Pimental of Cornell University. Add to this an equally disturbing loss of micro nutrients and minerals in fruits and vegetables. Feeding the soil with organic matter instead of ammonia and other synthetic fertilizers has proven to increase nutrients in produce, with higher levels of vitamins and minerals found in organic food, according to the 2005 study, “Elevating Antioxidant levels in food through organic farming and food processing,” Organic Center State of Science Review (1.05)

5. Taste Better and Truer Flavor
Scientists now know what we eaters have known all along: organic food often tastes better. It makes sense that strawberries taste yummier when raised in harmony with nature, but researchers at Washington State University just proved this as fact in lab taste trials where the organic berries were consistently judged as sweeter. Plus, new research verifies that some organic produce is often lower in nitrates and higher in antioxidants than conventional food. Let the organic feasting begin!

6. Assist Family Farmers of all Sizes
According to Organic Farming Research Foundation, as of 2006 there are approximately 10,000 certified organic producers in the U.S. compared to 2500 to 3,000 tracked in 1994. Measured against the two million farms estimated in the U.S. today, organic is still tiny. Family farms that are certified organic farms have a double economic benefit: they are profitable and they farm in harmony with their surrounding environment. Whether the farm is a 4-acre orchard or a 4,000-acre wheat farm, organic is a beneficial practice that is genuinely family-friendly.

7. Avoid Hasty and Poor Science in Your Food
Cloned food. GMOs and rBGH. Oh my! Interesting how swiftly these food technologies were rushed to market, when organic fought for 13 years to become federal law. Eleven years ago, genetically modified food was not part of our food supply; today an astounding 30 percent of our cropland is planted in GMOs. Organic is the only de facto seal of reassurance against these and other modern, lab-produced additions to our food supply, and the only food term with built in inspections and federal regulatory teeth.

8. Eating with a Sense of Place
Whether it is local fruit, imported coffee or artisan cheese, organic can demonstrate a reverence for the land and its people. No matter the zip code, organic has proven to use less energy (on average, about 30 percent less), is beneficial to soil, water and local habitat, and is safer for the people who harvest our food. Eat more seasonably by supporting your local farmers market while also supporting a global organic economy year round. It will make your taste buds happy.

9. Promote Biodiversity
Visit an organic farm and you’ll notice something: a buzz of animal, bird and insect activity. These organic oases are thriving, diverse habitats. Native plants, birds and hawks return usually after the first season of organic practices; beneficial insects allow for a greater balance, and indigenous animals find these farms a safe haven. As best said by Aldo Leopold, “A good farm must be one where the native flora and fauna have lost acreage without losing their existence.” An organic farm is the equivalent of reforestation. Industrial farms are the equivalent of clear cutting of native habitat with a focus on high farm yields.

10. Celebrate the Culture of Agriculture
Food is a ‘language’ spoken in every culture. Making this language organic allows for an important cultural revolution whereby diversity and biodiversity are embraced and chemical toxins and environmental harm are radically reduced, if not eliminated. The simple act of saving one heirloom seed from extinction, for example, is an act of biological and cultural conservation. Organic is not necessarily the most efficient farming system in the short run. It is slower, harder, more complex and more labor-intensive. But for the sake of culture everywhere, from permaculture to human culture, organic should be celebrated at every table.

Surprise! You're a guest Blogger!

How excited I was today to get an invite from a friend who also hosts a Pagan Blog. She told me she was inspired by me. I felt a little shocked as I always try to abide by the law of three and I always always send out good over bad. Well I guess it came back to me. I am completely flattered that she has invited me to be a Guest Blogger on her blog.

I'll be writing a post about my struggles with weight loss and how being able to practice my faith freely affected me. I'm already starting to write in my head.

I love it!

Will certainly post a link to the blog post when it's up.

When the Wine Flows.....

Yesterday my husband and I did some yard work and decided that after a nice long day of working that we should have some Sangria. I love Sangria. It makes you all nice and warm inside. It makes me relaxed and apparently willing to discuss the ins and outs of social media, strawberry farming and what's the correct sound our dogs should make in the middle of the night...

Oh... pass the water.

What makes people go off?

We've already established that I am a person with Borderline Personality Disorder as well as Bipolar Disorder. I have a tendency to react out of "fear" of loss or the "fear" of losing something. I logged into my social media site this morning and noticed that one of my younger cousin was making public statements of violence to another person. I sent a private email to which she cussed me out.

My first response was to try to work it out. Obviously there was a miscommunication right? I mean you wouldn't cuss out someone trying to help you right? Maybe not. Being young and dumb allows you the freedom to say stupid shit and to act stupid and no one says anything. No one does anything. I hope for her sake no one takes her comments seriously. I hope for her son's sake that no one calls the police and tosses her silly ass in jail. There goes her kid, and her husband's military career. That'll teach family from meddling in her business right?

Ahhh to be young and dumb.

How did I get to this state?

What on earth is going on with my connection to other today. I keep saying the wrong thing and putting things the wrong way. I think maybe I should go back to bed and start over. I starting to feel a little crazy heading my way.

I lit some candles and took a moment to center myself. I need some positive energy my way.

Food Inc...

Today I don't eat meat.  I'm a vegetarian, lacto-ovo to be exact.  I do drink organic milk and I eat the eggs that our hens in the back yard lay.

I try to always get organic food but it's really hard here in Seven Springs, NC to find it all the time.  I ran into a situation where I actually had broccli and cauliflower go bad after being in my fridge "VACUUM SEALED" for two days.  What's going on with our food?

Want to find out?

Today

So today I feel better. Today my skin is clearer. My eyes brighter. My hair shiney. My body healthy and me muscles stronger. I'm so glad I decided to go vegetarian.

Testing blogging ap

So this is my first post from an ap. Just testing it out to see how it works.

A change is a coming

When I started this blog, it was suppose to be a place for me to rant while in a mania. I've decided I need to change that. Now 106lbs lighter off all my meds I find there is so much more I want to blog about. So now this blog is about food spirituality and how it relates to my life. Hello 2011. We are going to get along great.
